乐队主唱卢卡斯·葛拉汉曾表示《7 Years》描写了他的人生经历以及对未来的美好憧憬。歌词中最终将他的年龄写到60岁是因为其父亲在61岁时去世了，他需要过去并相信未来。卢卡斯说，这首歌的内容是关于长大的，做一个好父亲是他觉得最重要的事情，而他最大的梦想就是不要去做一个消极的老家伙。卢卡斯·葛拉汉说如果父亲没在2012年去世，也许他也不会写出《7 Years》这首歌，也不会被华纳唱片签约。
